Webinar | Future-Ready Roads: Strategies and Tools for Smarter Infrastructure and Maintenance Management

Published on: June 23, 2026
Category: Webinar

Overview

This session offers a practical overview of how road authorities can keep their networks safe, durable, and cost-effective through smarter maintenance and infrastructure safety management. Drawing on international experience, it explains the shift from reactive, “worst-first” repair toward proactive, data-driven road asset management, and examines the strategies, tools, contracts, and technologies that make this shift possible. The webinar then links maintenance to road safety outcomes through the procedures of EU Directive 2019/1936 – road safety audits, road safety inspections, and network safety management – and illustrates the approach with Lithuania’s road maintenance reform. Together these perspectives show how future-ready roads depend on combining sound engineering, stable funding, and evidence-based decision-making.

KEY OBJECTIVES:

  • The case for proactive road maintenance: safety, economic, asset-preservation, and public-trust imperatives
  • Maintenance strategies compared: corrective (reactive), preventive (proactive), predictive (data-driven), and rehabilitation
  • Road Asset Management and the shift from a reactive “fix-it” to a proactive “manage-it” model
  • Core management tools: Pavement and Bridge Management Systems (PMS/BMS)
  • Budgeting and prioritisation models: condition-based, benefit-cost, risk-based, and optimisation
  • Maintenance contracting: performance-based vs. method-based contracts, with Baltic and Scandinavian practice
  • Winter and routine maintenance technologies, and Lithuania’s road maintenance reform as a case study
  • Road Safety Audits (RSA) across project stages under EU Directive 2019/1936
  • Road Safety Inspections (RSI) of roads in service, including periodic, night, and targeted inspections
  • Network Safety Management, Black Spot Management, and Network Safety Ranking.

Simultaneous interpretation in Armenian, Romanian, and Ukrainian will be provided.
