Webinar | Data Collection: Importance of improving the quality of serious crash data and investigations

Published on: September 30, 2026
Category: Webinar

Overview

Serious road crashes rarely have a single cause. They typically result from several contributing factors, involving road users, vehicles, the road environment, speed and the post-crash response. Yet crash investigations and reports often record just one cause, producing a misleading picture of what went wrong and where action is needed. This webinar explores how police can move from single-cause recording to thorough, Safe System-focused investigations that identify and accurately report all of the factors that contributed to a serious crash. Through a roadside case study and a look at how crash data is used, the speakers will show how better investigations produce information that supports smarter road policing, safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles and more data-informed national road safety strategies – and why police have a role across every part of the Safe System approach.
