News | Moldova approves modernised registry system for road crash data collection and analysis

Published on: May 20, 2026

On 14 May 2026, the Government of Moldova took a significant step forward in road safety management by approving the creation of a single national registry for road crash data. The new system will consolidate information from police, medical institutions, courts, transport authorities and insurance companies into one centralised platform, enabling faster, more accurate analysis of traffic incidents and clearer insights into road safety risks.

Currently, crash data is scattered across separate systems operated by different institutions. This fragmentation makes it difficult to identify risks quickly, conduct comprehensive analysis, or understand the full picture of road safety challenges. The new integrated registry will eliminate these silos, providing standardised records and more efficient information exchange between responsible agencies. This unified approach is essential for understanding patterns in road incidents and identifying where interventions can have the greatest impact.

The registry will align with European Union CADaS standards, positioning Moldova to report comparable data at the European level and strengthen international cooperation on road safety. By adopting EU-aligned standards and supporting a Safe System Approach, Moldova is signalling its commitment to both regional integration and evidence-based road safety policy. The system will also incorporate robust safeguards for personal data protection, cybersecurity and information access, ensuring that data is managed responsibly and in compliance with legal requirements.

The Eastern Partnership Road Safety Observatory welcomes this development to strengthen national road safety data collection, management and analysis in line with best EU and international practices. By implementing a modernised, integrated crash registry aligned with European standards, Moldova is building the foundation for systematic monitoring of road safety outcomes. With road casualties in the country still exceeding European and global averages, this data-driven approach is essential to identifying which policies and interventions will be most effective in achieving Moldova's goal of reducing road casualties.
